What is vinyl record insurance?

Our vinyl insurance protects your vinyl records should they be accidentally lost, damaged or stolen. Vinyl records are not only a collector’s item but are also used by DJs, making them extremely valuable in order to perform their job. Our comprehensive collections insurance gives you peace of mind to display your records wherever you want and transport them to your next destination.

Why do you need to insure vinyl records?

Vinyl records can easily be damaged. Many high-value record collections include vintage vinyl, which is more fragile than newer presses, meaning that extra care needs to be taken when displaying or transporting them.

Vinyl collections can also be very large, amounting to thousands of pounds in value, making them a target for criminals especially if they are left on display.

Main benefits of a vinyl record insurance policy

  • No excess to pay.
  • Single specified records or entire collections can be covered.
  • Accidental damage is included as standard, giving you peace of mind.
  • Theft cover and water damage cover included.
  • Stand-alone cover up to £250,000 available.
  • Agreed value with approved valuations.

In order to obtain stand-alone vinyl insurance, it’s important you have a full inventory of items as this will need to be submitted within 28 days of policy inception.

How does vinyl insurance work?

Like all insurance policies, determining the value of your single vinyl record or collection is the first step to figuring out which policy you need. Rare and limited-edition records will be worth more and the condition that these are in can impact which policy you need.

It can be effective to get a professional valuation and have your collection re-valued every few years, as like all collectibles, vinyl records constantly fluctuate in value.

Vinyl Record Insurance FAQ’s

Why would I need specialist collection insurance for my vinyl collection?

Specialist vinyl insurance is for valuable collections, especially if your collection is worth much more than your other belongings, or if you live in a shared home. If you have a valuable home and a valuable vinyl collection, we can usually cover both on the same policy.

What are the benefits of vinyl cover?

Vinyl cover provides peace of mind by protecting your valuable collection against unforeseen events. This can include accidental damage and loss, as well as specific risks like water damage, theft, and attempted theft.

Aren’t vinyls covered under my regular home insurance?

You’ll need to check your specific home insurance policy, as a vinyl collection might be classed as a valuable item with limited coverage. This means you might not be as protected as you think. Also, some policies might only offer vouchers for replacement, not cash, which could make it difficult to replace your unique vinyl.

What if I don’t know the value of my collection?

You’ll need to put together an inventory of the vinyl with estimated values before looking for vinyl insurance. If you don’t know the value, then it can be tough to insure you.

Should I get a professional valuation?

If you want an agreed value payout, yes. If you’re happy with market value (what it was worth just before the loss, up to your coverage limit), then you don’t have to get a valuation.

How is the value of the vinyl records calculated?

Value is based on the vinyl and artwork quality, rarity, the musician(s), and its provenance (its unique story and ownership history).

Do I need an inventory of each vinyl insured?

Yes, you’ll need an inventory. Depending on the size of the collection, we can agree on an inventory list of items over a certain value only.

What is the best way to store vinyl records?

Storing your vinyl records properly is the best way to avoid accidental damage or even theft. Make sure the room is a steady temperature of 15°C to 25°C and that the records are exposed to minimal amounts of light. In addition, don’t stack your records on top of each other, instead store them upright vertically.

How do I transport vinyl records safely?

Transporting vinyl records can be risky, but having the right measures in place can minimise this risk. Store your records upright in protective sleeves in a box that is sturdy, and ideally, padded around the sides. Make sure the boxes are stacked correctly in the vehicle to minimise any movement during transportation.

Does a vinyl insurance policy include the vinyl sleeve?

Yes, vinyl sleeves are just as valuable as the record itself and can add a lot of value to your collection. For more information, read our full guide to insuring your vinyl collection.

Is my vinyl collection covered if stored in an outbuilding?

No, your collection would need to be stored in the main home to be covered.
