The journey to propose is a magical one, and choosing the best places to propose can often be a difficult and arduous task. If you’re planning to propose to your loved one, you may wish to pick somewhere exotic and magical abroad to make this moment even more memorable.

Here is our list of the most luxurious places to propose abroad that could elevate the moment to something truly unforgettable.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia. Bora Bora Overwater Bungalow with Mount Otemanu.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora is a beautiful destination that many people dream of visiting, making it one of the best places to propose. It is naturally stunning, with an incredible climate and superb light quality, so it’s no surprise that many Bora Bora resorts have wedding planning teams who can also help you to plan the perfect proposal!

There are many ways to make proposing unforgettable on this French Polynesian island famed for love. These include booking a private sunset boat or helicopter trip, or adding a ukulele player and singer or fire dance and drums show to a proposal on the beach as the sun sets.

You can even arrange a skydiving, underwater or snorkelling proposal on Bora Bora!

Milford Sound, New Zealand

Options for a romantic proposal at Milford Sound are abundant, and visiting ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ means that your photographs will also be spectacular. This World Heritage site, with its dramatic glacier-crafted landscape, unspoilt remoteness and teeming wildlife, is certainly a unique environment for proposing abroad.

There are services to help you with proposing, including overnight or day cruises and kayaks for hire. For some couples, the best places to propose in Milford Sound are at the top of a mountain or with a lakeside picnic.

French Riviera, France

The French Riviera is synonymous with glamour, style and romance, so, of course, it is one of the most beautiful places to propose.

The top location for your proposal depends on your personal preference. You can choose from historical buildings, cliffs with spectacular sea views, sunset on a French Riviera beach or island, or a romantic dinner in Saint-Tropez or Cannes, for example.

One of the best places to propose in the French Riviera, however, is Monaco’s gardens, castle and historical ruins.

Santorini, Greece

There are many reasons why Santorini is one of the most romantic places to propose, and also a popular choice for overseas weddings. There are even local companies that specialise in organising the perfect proposal on this stunning Greek island.

Among the ideas for making your special moment utterly unforgettable are catamaran yacht trips, fireworks on the beach, and luxury transport to an idyllic private place to pop the question.

As the island of Santorini is such a beautiful and untamed place, you will feel as though you are starring in a movie.

The Madinat Jumeirah area of Dubai, United Aran Emirates

Dubai, UAE

Dubai’s status as an aspirational holiday destination – and a wonderful place for proposals – has grown as it’s only around seven hours away from the UK. There are plenty of airline companies to whisk you to this romantic location, and when you get there, your choice of backdrops is amazing.

For example, your proposal could be high in the sky at Palm Jumeirah, or in a helicopter or hot air balloon above the desert. A private yacht could take you to the best view of the Dubai skyline for your proposal. Or, if you prefer to have your feet firmly on the ground, why not choose a picnic on the beach or in a remote oasis? How about a night beneath the stars in a crystal-roofed desert tent?

Marrakech, Morocco

The world’s most beautiful places to propose overlap with some of the most exotic holiday destinations. What could be more beguiling and mysterious than the ‘secret’ alleyways, colourful courtyards and breath-taking snow-capped mountain scenery of Marrakech?

This historical city also offers some stunning palaces and picturesque gardens – the perfect places to pop the question – and is full of vibrant sights and sounds.

Swiss Alps, Switzerland

The Swiss Alps is another of the world’s ‘top spots’ for proposing marriage and etching this moment in your mind forever. You can be certain of having some stunning photos to share with family and friends when you get home.

Swiss Alps proposal opportunities include riding the Swiss Glacier Express train or standing on Europe’s oldest wooden bridge, across the Reuss River in Lucerne. You could get down on one knee by a castle on the shores of Lake Geneva, or with views of the mighty Matterhorn in the background.

Panorama of Positano town, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Your dream destination for a proposal could be a picturesque coastal village along the panoramic Amalfi Coast. The landscape of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is second to none, with its fascinating maritime history, dramatic cliffs and lush greenery.

You will also find many enchanting buildings and charming harbours for a memorable backdrop for a romantic moment. A proposal in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii is also an option while staying along the Amalfi Coast.

With some of the best places to propose, you can also enjoy the world-famous cuisine and wines found in this part of Italy.

Maui, Hawaii

There is a long list of romantic things to do on the beautiful island of Maui. One of the most romantic locations to pop the question is Haleakalā, as the sun sets or beneath a canopy of stars. Alternatively, you could find a remote beach to propose with a trip to Lanai to get away from other tourists.

There are adult-only resorts for romantic getaways, and sunset cruises off the coast of Maui, and there is also the option to propose at the island’s most famous restaurant, Mama’s Fish House.

Cherry Blossoms at Fushimi, Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is widely considered to be one of the most romantic cities in Japan. It certainly provides some of the most beautiful places to propose, including beneath its iconic cherry blossom displays.

Year round, there are mesmerising streets to wander along, romantic hotels and hideaways to stay at, superb Japanese gardens to explore, stunning shrines and temples to visit, and fascinating arts and culture to experience.

This is also a top destination for hiking if you want your Kyoto proposal to be off the beaten track amid breath-taking mountain scenery.

Insuring your engagement ring before embarking on your luxury journey

Some of the most romantic places to propose involve travelling and also using local transport. This means that you should keep your engagement ring hidden in order to ensure its safety. It’s important to insure your engagement ring before heading off on your luxury trip.

Insuring an engagement ring with Stanhope is an excellent option. This could include instant and worldwide coverage, as well as protection against accidental damage, theft or loss. Also, getting an appraisal gives you a good understanding of the jewellery’s worth which can be used for the insurance policy if anything was to happen to the ring. That way, you can enjoy peace of mind during your romantic holiday knowing you are protected if the ring is damaged, lost or stolen.

Stanhope’s team of experts can help you choose the right policy so contact us to get a quote today.

I started working in the insurance industry in 2004. Four years later, I left to focus on theological studies, working as a youth worker and then as a ministry director in Seattle, USA. When returning to the UK, I had an opportunity to work for the late Andrew Marchington. I joined his firm as a sales advisor when it had around ten staff members. Within three years, I was Head of Ops with a staff team of over 30 people. After a chance encounter in 2019 with Rachel Living and Will Cooper, I co-started Stanhope to build a high-value home, luxury watch, and jewellery broker synonymous with trust. I love being with Donna, my wife, and four kids when not working, cramming in the odd row, or run when I can. I am fortunate to love what I do and consider it a blessing to grow the Stanhope brand.
